How I Got Into Birds
My journey into the bird world started in a rural backyard where I grew up. I was a part of 4-H, and one of my earliest memories is having a pet chicken that was rejected by the rest of the flock. I took it upon myself to care for her, which sparked my interest in birds and animal behavior. Over the years, that love only grew, leading me to hand-feed a wild baby bird as an adult, which cemented my fascination with birds and their complex personalities.
Who Am I?
I'm Diane Burroughs, the founder of BirdSupplies.com. While I started the website in 1998, I continued working in my mental health job until the COVID pandemic. My background in behavioral science has been key in helping me understand how to care for these smart, social creatures.
BirdSupplies.com grew out of my passion for understanding birds’ emotional and physical needs. Now, I'm fully focused on creating wellness products and building the best pet bird care blog, sharing my knowledge to help bird owners everywhere provide the best care for their feathered companions, ensuring they become happy, lifelong friends.
Meet My Flock
I'm lucky to have my own flock of incredible birds who inspire everything I do. Each of them has taught me something new about the complexity of bird care.
- Peachy, my Moluccan cockatoo, has been with me since 1999. Peachy was a rescue, and his journey has taught me the importance of patience and understanding in bird care.
- Smokey, a Congo African Grey, was hand-fed by a responsible bird store in Wichita, KS, and hatched in 1997. Smokey’s intelligence and curiosity keep me on my toes daily.
- Timmy, my Timneh African Grey, was hand-fed by a responsible breeder and joined my flock in 2001. His calm and loving nature brings balance to our flock.
- Kiwi, the youngest, is a green cheek conure who hatched in 2020. Kiwi’s playful energy is a constant source of fun and joy. Meet Our Flock
Why I Do It
At BirdSupplies.com, our mission is simple: to educate bird owners on how to provide the best possible care for their smart, social, and often misunderstood pets.
