This guide is for bird owners who are worried about aspergillosis because their bird has ongoing breathing problems, unusual breathing sounds, weight loss, reduced stamina, a voice change, or a respiratory problem that is not improving as expected.

If your bird is open-mouth breathing while resting, gasping, severely weak, unable to stay perched, losing balance, having seizures, or collapsing, don't spend time trying to figure out whether it is aspergillosis. Get veterinary help right away.
Quick answer: Aspergillosis is a fungal disease caused by Aspergillus mold. In birds, it most often affects the lungs and air sacs. The tricky part is that the early signs can be subtle, several other illnesses can look similar, and there isn't one simple test that gives every bird a definite yes-or-no answer. Treatment can take weeks or months, but birds can recover.

If you're reading this because your bird isn't acting right, you probably don't want a lesson on fungus first. You want to know how worried you should be and what to do next.

If you already have a vet appointment, a few things can make that visit more useful:
- Write down when you first noticed something different.
- Bring recent weights if you have them.
- Take a short video of unusual breathing or sounds if you can do it without stressing your bird.
- Bring a list of medications and supplements.
- Mention significant mold, water damage, construction dust, spoiled food, or other possible environmental exposures.

What Is Aspergillosis in Birds?
Aspergillosis is a fungal disease caused by molds in the Aspergillus family. Birds usually encounter the microscopic spores by breathing them in from their environment.
In birds, the disease most often affects the respiratory system — especially the lungs and air sacs. Depending on where the infection develops, it can also affect the trachea, sinuses, or syrinx, which is the bird's voice box. More advanced disease can spread beyond the respiratory system.1
The important part is this: being exposed to Aspergillus is not the same thing as having aspergillosis. Aspergillus spores are common in the environment, and healthy birds encounter them without necessarily becoming sick.
Why Do Some Birds Get Sick While Others Don't?
Think of it as a combination of how much fungus the bird is exposed to and how well that bird can defend against it.
A bird may be more vulnerable if they're already sick, chronically stressed, poorly nourished, immunosuppressed, or exposed to a large amount of fungal spores. Long-term vitamin A deficiency is one known risk factor because vitamin A helps maintain the respiratory lining and normal immune defenses.1
Some species, including African greys, Amazons, cockatiels and macaws, are reported more often in avian aspergillosis cases — but any bird can develop it.
This does not automatically mean you did something wrong. Later we'll look at the environmental risks you can actually control without trying to turn your home into a sterile bubble.
Could My Bird Have Aspergillosis?
Sometimes aspergillosis announces itself with obvious breathing trouble. But chronic disease can be much less dramatic.
One of the most common themes among worried bird owners is much simpler: "My bird just seems off."
What Are the First Changes Bird Owners Usually Notice?
Your bird may be quieter than usual, sleep more, lose interest in favorite activities, eat with less enthusiasm, or tire faster during normal play or flight.
You might notice that a bird who normally flies across the room without thinking about it now lands and needs longer to recover. Vets may call that exercise intolerance. At home, it usually looks more like, "That little bit of activity took more out of him than it should have."
Weight may also begin drifting down. Because this can happen gradually, a gram scale often picks it up before your eyes do.
Other clues can include a voice that sounds different or breathing that suddenly looks or sounds different than your bird's usual breathing.
What matters most: don't try to diagnose aspergillosis from one sign. Look for a change from your bird's normal that persists, progresses, or starts showing up alongside other changes.
My Bird Is Still Eating and Acting Pretty Normal — Could It Still Be Serious?
Yes. This is one of the things that makes bird illness so confusing.
A bird with developing disease may still eat breakfast, preen, talk to you and demand attention. Instead of asking only, "Is my bird still eating?" look at the whole picture.
Is your bird eating with the same enthusiasm? Is the weight stable? Are they sleeping more? Does normal play take more effort? Has their voice changed? Is their breathing different when they're sitting quietly?
A better question is: "Is my bird still acting like themselves?" Still eating is reassuring, but it doesn't cancel out a pattern of weight loss, lower stamina or breathing changes.
Does Wheezing, Clicking or Tail Bobbing Mean Aspergillosis?
No. These signs can tell you that breathing may not be normal. They cannot tell you why.
Bacterial infections, fungal disease, airway blockage, nutritional problems, heart disease and several other conditions can look surprisingly similar from across the room.

What to do: if these changes are persistent, occurring while your bird is resting, or getting worse, arrange an avian veterinary exam rather than trying to decide from the sound alone whether it's Aspergillus.
Why Is Aspergillosis So Hard to Diagnose?
This is probably the most frustrating part of the disease.
There isn't one perfect blood test, swab, PCR or X-ray that settles every case. A recent systematic review of diagnostic testing in birds reached essentially the same conclusion: currently available tests vary in accuracy, so veterinarians often have to put several pieces together.2
That may include what you've noticed at home, your bird's examination, weight and history, bloodwork, imaging, fungal testing and sometimes a sample taken directly from an abnormal area.
Think puzzle, not pregnancy test. One result may make aspergillosis more or less likely. It does not always close the case by itself.
My Bird Tested Negative — Could It Still Be Aspergillosis?
Depending on the test, yes.
Some tests look for the bird's immune response to Aspergillus. If that response is weak, the result may not clearly identify the infection. Other tests look for fungal material or DNA, but the organism may not be present in the particular sample that was collected.
The other side of the problem is that birds are exposed to Aspergillus in the environment. Evidence of exposure does not always prove that Aspergillus is actually invading tissue and causing the bird's illness.
Your next question for the vet: "If this test was negative, what still makes you concerned about aspergillosis — and what test would give us useful new information?"
What Do Bloodwork, X-Rays and Fungal Tests Actually Tell My Vet?
Each test is answering a slightly different question.

Repeat testing can also have a purpose. Your veterinarian may want another X-ray or blood test later not because they're starting over, but because they want to see whether the abnormalities are improving, staying the same or getting worse.
Why Would My Bird Need CT, Endoscopy or a Biopsy?
Sometimes the first round of tests leaves too much uncertainty.
A CT scan can give a more detailed look at where an abnormality is and how much tissue is involved. Endoscopy may allow an avian veterinarian to actually look at affected air sacs or other structures and collect a sample from the suspicious area.
A tissue sample can sometimes provide much stronger evidence because the laboratory can look for fungus invading the actual tissue.
Not every bird needs these procedures. Your vet has to weigh how much useful information the test may provide against anesthesia and procedure risks for that particular bird.
What if I Don't Feel Confident in the Diagnosis or Treatment Plan?
It's reasonable to ask questions. Aspergillosis can involve expensive tests, medications given for a long time and, sometimes, a diagnosis that isn't completely black and white. Wanting to understand why your vet recommends something doesn't make you difficult.
If the explanation still doesn't make sense to you, or you're uncomfortable with a major procedure or months of treatment, a second opinion from another avian veterinarian or avian specialist is a reasonable next step.
One important caution:
Aspergillosis can be a serious disease. Don't stop an antifungal, change the dose, substitute another medication or abandon the treatment plan because of advice from a forum, Facebook group or someone else's experience.
If you disagree with the plan, get another avian veterinary opinion — and let that veterinarian review the records, imaging, lab results and medications before making changes.
If your bird is struggling to breathe or rapidly getting worse, don't delay urgent care while you search for the perfect second opinion.
If It Is Aspergillosis, What Happens Next?
Treatment depends on where the infection is, how extensive it is and how sick your bird is when treatment begins.
Antifungal medication is usually central to treatment. A sicker bird may also need supportive care such as oxygen, fluids, nutritional support or hospitalization. If a fungal plaque or granuloma is blocking an airway or is difficult for medication to reach, an avian specialist may sometimes need to treat or remove it directly.1
Why Can Treatment Take Weeks or Months?
Aspergillosis isn't usually a "take this for ten days and you're done" kind of infection.
The bird's body may surround areas of fungal growth with inflammatory tissue, forming plaques or granulomas. Unfortunately, that can also make it harder for medication to reach all of the fungus.
Then there's the healing itself. Even when the infection is coming under control, irritated or damaged respiratory tissues don't instantly return to normal.
So a long treatment period does not automatically mean the medication isn't working. What matters is whether the overall trend — symptoms, weight, examination and follow-up testing — is moving in the right direction.
How Will I Know if My Bird Is Getting Better?
Don't look for one dramatic turning point. Recovery may show up as a series of small changes.
Signs things may be moving in the right direction:
- Weight stops falling.
- Appetite starts returning to normal.
- Your bird is talking, playing or interacting more.
- Breathing looks easier.
- Unusual breathing sounds happen less often.
- Normal activity takes less out of them.
- Stamina begins to return.
One caution: feeling better does not necessarily mean the fungus is gone. Keep follow-up appointments and continue treatment as directed.
Your veterinarian may also use repeat bloodwork or imaging to make sure the improvement you see at home matches what's happening internally.
What if the Medication Seems to Be Making My Bird Worse?
This is worth calling about.
Antifungal medications can have side effects, and birds vary in how well they tolerate them. Watch for a meaningful drop in appetite, continued weight loss, vomiting or regurgitation, worsening lethargy, major changes in droppings, or a new problem that appeared after treatment started.1
Call the prescribing veterinarian rather than changing the medication yourself. Your vet may want to examine the bird, check bloodwork or adjust the plan — but that decision should be based on your bird, not another bird's medication experience online.
When Should I Call Before the Next Scheduled Appointment?
You don't have to wait until the next routine recheck if something has clearly changed.
Call sooner if breathing is getting noticeably harder, weight continues to fall, your bird stops eating, repeated vomiting or regurgitation develops, weakness is increasing, normal activities suddenly become difficult, or you suspect a medication reaction.
If your bird progresses to open-mouth breathing at rest, gasping, severe weakness or collapse, that has moved beyond "call before the next appointment." That's urgent.
Can a Bird Recover From Aspergillosis?
Yes, birds can recover from aspergillosis.
But there isn't one recovery story. The outcome depends on where the infection is, how much damage has occurred, whether it has spread, what other health problems the bird has and how well the infection responds to treatment.
What Determines a Bird's Chances of Recovery?
A bird with a more localized infection found earlier is in a different situation from a bird whose disease has already become widespread.
Your veterinarian is looking at the whole picture: the location and extent of the infection, respiratory damage, weight and nutritional condition, underlying illness, immune status and what happens after treatment begins.
That's why blanket statements online such as "aspergillosis is always fatal" or "this medication always cures it" aren't very helpful. The same diagnosis can look very different in two birds.
Why Is My Bird Still Winded Even Though Treatment Is Working?
Getting the infection under control and getting the respiratory system back to normal may not happen at the same speed.
Inflammation, thickened air sacs, granulomas or scarring can leave a bird with less respiratory reserve while healing continues. Personality and appetite may come back before full stamina does.
You might see a bird start climbing and playing again before they're ready for long flights.
Improving slowly is different from getting worse. If breathing remains unusually hard, noisy or starts deteriorating again, let your veterinarian know rather than assuming it's simply part of recovery.
Can Aspergillosis Come Back?
It can.
Recurrence can happen when infection is difficult to completely eliminate, an underlying health problem remains, damaged or scarred respiratory tissue persists, treatment ends before disease is fully controlled, or the bird continues to experience significant fungal exposure.
That's why the last veterinary recheck can matter just as much as the first one. Your bird looking normal again is wonderful — but it isn't always the same thing as knowing the disease is gone.
Where Did My Bird Get Aspergillosis — Did I Cause This?
This is one of the first places many bird owners' minds go: "What did I miss?"
Aspergillus spores are common in the environment. A bird developing aspergillosis does not prove that their owner failed to clean enough or somehow caused the disease.
A more useful approach is to stop looking for one thing to blame and look instead for anything that may be creating unusually heavy fungal exposure.
Can a Dirty or Damp Cage Increase the Risk?
Yes. Wet organic material gives mold a place to grow.
That can include spoiled food, damp cage paper or substrate, food debris mixed with droppings, wet nesting material or an area that repeatedly stays damp because of poor ventilation.
But "dirty cage = aspergillosis" is far too simplistic.
The question worth asking is: Is anything around my bird staying wet, moldy, musty or decaying long enough for fungus to grow?
I Found Mold Near My Bird — Does That Mean My Bird Has Aspergillosis?
No. Finding mold tells you there may be a source of fungal exposure. It does not diagnose your bird.
If you find a significant active mold problem, move your bird away from the affected area, find and correct the source of moisture, and clean or remediate the mold appropriately. Throw away obviously moldy bird food or materials that cannot be safely cleaned.
If your bird is already sick: tell your avian vet about substantial mold, water damage, recent construction or renovation, spoiled food, or another major exposure. That history can be useful even though it doesn't prove the diagnosis.
Do Peanuts Cause Aspergillosis in Parrots?
This is one of those internet warnings that mixes two different problems together.
Peanuts, nuts, grains and other foods can become contaminated with certain Aspergillus molds under poor growing or storage conditions. Some Aspergillus species can also produce toxins called aflatoxins.3
Aflatoxin poisoning and respiratory aspergillosis are not the same disease. Feeding one properly stored peanut does not mean your bird will develop aspergillosis.
The practical advice is much less dramatic: don't feed visibly moldy or musty food, buy food from reliable sources, and store it so it stays dry.
What Should I Change at Home After an Aspergillosis Diagnosis?
You do not need to sterilize your house.
In fact, eliminating every Aspergillus spore isn't realistic. The goal is to prevent the kind of damp, moldy conditions that allow fungal levels to build up and to reduce avoidable exposure.
What Should I Clean, Fix or Throw Away?
Start with the things that actually matter.
What Everyday Habits Actually Lower the Risk?
The easiest way to lower fungal exposure is to make a few checks part of your normal bird-care routine. You shouldn't have to remember a long prevention list every day.
Build the check into what you're already doing:
- Every time you change the cage tray paper or substrate, check the corners of the tray. Look for dampness, stuck food, droppings or debris that may be hiding underneath the edges.
- Remove wet or spoiled fresh food before it sits long enough to become musty or moldy.
- Keep food and water dishes clean and notice any area around them that repeatedly stays wet.
- Store bird food somewhere cool and dry, and discard anything that smells musty or looks questionable.
- Clean humidifiers regularly and pay attention to condensation, leaks or other places where moisture keeps returning.
- When you clean the cage, look beyond the obvious surfaces — under the grate, around tray edges, beneath bowls and anywhere food or moisture tends to collect.
The goal is consistency, not a sterile cage. A quick look every time you change the substrate makes it much easier to catch a damp or mold-prone spot before it becomes an ongoing problem.
Balanced nutrition, reasonable ventilation and good overall health matter too. Long-term nutritional deficiencies — particularly vitamin A deficiency — can weaken the normal defenses of the respiratory tract.1
These habits can lower the risk of heavy fungal exposure. They can't guarantee that a bird will never develop aspergillosis.
What About Humidifiers and Houseplants?
A humidifier or houseplant isn't automatically dangerous.
The problem is when moisture is allowed to sit around and support mold growth. A poorly maintained humidifier can become contaminated. Likewise, potting soil that stays constantly soggy and visibly moldy deserves attention.
Clean and maintain humidifiers according to their instructions, fix persistent condensation or dampness, and don't continually overwater plants in the bird's room.
You don't need to keep your parrot in desert-dry air. The goal is to prevent chronic dampness and visible mold, not chase an arbitrary humidity number.
Would an Air Purifier Help?
A properly sized mechanical or HEPA air purifier can remove airborne particles, including some mold spores. That can make filtration a useful extra layer in a bird household.
But an air purifier cannot fix a leak, mold growing inside a wall, spoiled food or another active source of fungal growth.
Think in this order: fix the moisture source → remove the mold → improve reasonable airflow → use filtration as an additional layer.
Choose mechanical filtration and avoid devices intended to generate ozone. EPA guidance also emphasizes source control first and filtration as a supplement, not a substitute for correcting mold and moisture problems.4
What Everyday Habits Actually Lower the Risk?
Most prevention is surprisingly ordinary.
Keep the cage area reasonably clean and dry. Remove fresh foods before they spoil. Store bird food so it stays dry. Fix leaks and obvious mold problems promptly. Keep humidifiers and water systems clean. Provide reasonable ventilation.
A balanced diet matters too. Long-term nutritional deficiencies — especially vitamin A deficiency — can weaken the normal defenses of the respiratory tract.1
These steps can reduce risk. They cannot guarantee that a bird will never develop aspergillosis.
Can My Other Birds or My Family Catch Aspergillosis?
Is Aspergillosis Contagious Between Birds?
Generally, no. Birds usually develop aspergillosis after inhaling spores from the environment rather than catching the respiratory infection directly from another bird.1
But birds living together share the same food, air, cage room, ventilation and environmental conditions. So if one bird develops aspergillosis, it still makes sense to look carefully at the environment the others share.
Should I Separate My Sick Bird From the Others?
Usually the reason for separating a sick bird is not that aspergillosis itself is highly contagious.
A sick bird may simply do better somewhere quiet where activity can be limited and where you can clearly see what they're eating, drinking and passing in their droppings.
They may also need to be protected from flockmates who want to play, compete for food or simply won't leave them alone.

Can Humans Catch Aspergillosis From a Bird?
Aspergillosis is generally acquired by breathing Aspergillus spores from the environment — not by catching a respiratory infection from your pet bird.
CDC guidance similarly states that lung aspergillosis is not spread between people or between people and animals.5
People with severely weakened immune systems or certain significant lung diseases are more vulnerable to Aspergillus in the environment and should follow the advice of their own physician about mold exposure.
What Should I Ask My Avian Vet About Aspergillosis?
You don't need to understand every lab value. But you should understand what your veterinarian thinks is happening, what they're trying to learn from the next test and how you'll know whether treatment is working.
Useful questions to take to the appointment:
- What makes you suspect aspergillosis rather than another respiratory problem?
- What did the tests we've already done tell us — and what didn't they tell us?
- If a test was negative, how much does that change your concern?
- Would another test give us information that would actually change treatment?
- How will we know whether the treatment is working?
- What medication side effects should I watch for at home?
- How often should I weigh my bird?
- When do you want to repeat bloodwork or imaging?
- What changes mean I should call before our next appointment?
- What is a realistic treatment and recovery timeline for my bird?
If you still don't understand or feel comfortable with the plan after asking questions, getting a second avian veterinary opinion is reasonable. Bring the records and test results so the second veterinarian can evaluate the same evidence rather than starting from guesswork.
What isn't a good substitute is changing a potentially lifesaving treatment because another bird owner's diagnosis or medication experience sounds similar.
When Is This an Emergency?
Get veterinary help right away if your bird develops:
- Open-mouth breathing while resting
- Gasping or obvious difficulty moving air
- Pronounced tail bobbing with every breath
- Severe weakness or unusual stillness
- Difficulty standing or staying perched
- Loss of balance
- Seizures or other serious neurological changes
- Collapse
These signs do not prove aspergillosis. They mean your bird is seriously ill and needs veterinary care now.
