Kevlar Vest For Severe Feather Plucking & Self-Mutilation

  • Overview

    • This Kevlar Bird Vest was designed to support severe feather plucking and self-mutilators from reaching vulnerable areas.
    • Kevlar, the "bulletproof" material greatly slows down your bird's access to chest mutilation.
    • Features DuraGrip® industrial strength hook & loop closure.

Support your severe feather plucking bird or self-mutilator with our Kevlar Bird Vest.  Kevlar is a relatively lightweight type of plastic that is so strong that it can withstand bullets and knives.  That's what makes it such a remarkable material for protecting self-mutilating parrots.

Our innovative bird vest features a Kevlar insert sandwiched between two layers of fluffy fleece.  The finished bird vest covers the chest and back withstanding numerous bite attempts. While a bird can eventually rip it up, it takes a lot of time and effort. This buys you time to allow serious wounds to heal and combine other self-mutilation management strategies to fortify your pet's recovery.

We've developed the Kevlar Bird Vest to be a minimally restrictive alternative for severe feather plucking birds and self-mutilators. The snug neck and adjustable fit make it harder for your bird to further injure its self.  Most birds can eat, climb, and play in this collar.

    Here's what our customers say:

"This bird vest saved my bird's life!"

Note: Colors may vary from those shown and may change seasonally.

  • More Info

We recommend that you contact your Avian Vet for a full examination to determine the potential cause of your bird's self-mutilation behavior.

Aggressive mutilators can penetrate Kevlar with a lot of work.  If your bird is a highly compulsive mutilator consider these protective measures:

    1. Spray the Kevlar Bird Vest with No Chew or a similar bitter daily.
    2. Cover the Kevlar Bird Vest with a Fleece Bird Collar
    3. Remove the Kevlar Bird Vest when the Polymer-based Kevlar becomes exposed to prevent your bird from ingesting the fibers.

A Kevlar Bird Vest for Parrots alone will NOT resolve a feather plucking problem. I strongly encourage you to combine the following strategies with the Kevlar Bird
Vest to gain some management traction:

    • Consult with your avian veterinarian to determine if a prescription-grade psychotropic medication that supports compulsive behavior may be of benefit
    • Watch Cockatude 14 to educate yourself on this disorder
    • Learn and institute wellness & parrot husbandry strategies
    • Resolution of medical problems
    • Learn and practice behavior modification for feather plucking birds.

Since even individual species may vary in size, all size recommendations are approximate, Click here to measure your bird.  Please check with your avian veterinarian to uncover the actual causes of feather plucking and self-mutilation.  Always use the Tube Collar Neckband under supervision until you know that your bird tolerates it well.

This Kevlar Bird Vest is flexible and designed for self-mutilators and severe feather plucking birds or as an entry-level collar to get your bird used to wearing apparel.
