Velcro Cone Bird Collar

The Velcro Cone Bird Collar is a lightweight, soft cone designed for parrots that are starting to pluck, chew, or over-preen—but are not yet in a severe cycle.

It is best for birds that keep going back to one area, but are not plucking all over the body or damaging skin.

How It Works

This collar uses a 4-layer fleece cone to gently limit how far your bird can bend and reach. It creates enough space between the beak and body to reduce access to problem areas.

The design allows normal movement, eating, and climbing—while interrupting the repetitive reach → preen → damage cycle.

Best For

  • Early-stage feather picking or over-preening
  • Birds focused on one area (chest, shoulder, or under wings)
  • Feather damage without open wounds
  • Birds that need a lighter, less restrictive option

Not the Right Fit If

  • Your bird is plucking across multiple areas
  • There is skin damage, bleeding, or self-mutilation
  • Your bird can already bend around softer collars

Why Bird Owners Choose It

  • 4 layers of soft fleece create a gentle but effective barrier
  • Lightweight design supports daily wear and adjustment
  • Less bulky than structured cones
  • Helps interrupt early habits before they escalate

Fit & Security Tip

If your bird learns to loosen or remove collars, apply a small strip of moleskin over the Velcro closure to reinforce it. This makes it harder to pick at and improves hold during wear.

Important

This collar helps reduce access so feathers can recover. It does not address the underlying cause of plucking. Use alongside enrichment, foraging, improved diet, calming support, and behavior training.

Velcro Cone vs. Fringy Cone: Which Does Your Bird Need?

Feature Velcro Cone Collar Fringy Cone Collar
Protection Level Light to moderate restriction Maximum restriction and blocking
Best For Early plucking or over-preening in one area Severe plucking, spreading damage, or self-harm
What It Stops Reduces access to targeted spots Prevents access to most of the body
Design 4 layers of soft fleece, flexible cone Structured cone with reinforced insert for firm blocking
If Your Bird Can Still Reach Consider pairing with the Fringy Neck Collar Pair with BeakGuard Vest for added protection
Comfort & Mobility Lightweight, easier adjustment More restrictive, built for protection
Behavior Stage Habit forming, not yet escalated Entrenched cycle, difficult to interrupt
Owner Goal Stop it early before it spreads Stop damage immediately so healing can begin

Quick guidance:

If your bird is just starting to pick or focusing on one spot, start with the Velcro Cone.
If your bird is breaking feathers, reaching multiple areas, or you’re seeing skin damage, move to the Fringy Cone.

My lovebird has had a mild plucking condition for many years, but in the last two months, it got worse and she started picking at her shoulder. I have tried many other soft collars but she chewed through them in a day. This Velcro bird collar is so much better. Thank you so much for the great product.

Product Questions

Use it when your bird starts plucking or during known trigger times.

Mild to moderate pluckers usually haven’t developed a compulsive habit, so you have some flexibility. You don’t need it on all day.

Watch for patterns—alone time, routine changes, late-day restlessness—and use the cone during those windows.

Never use it as punishment. It’s just there to interrupt the behavior while you redirect your bird to something better.

That’s normal at first. The cone feels unfamiliar against the feathers, so your bird will try to remove it.

What to do:

  • Use moleskin to improve velcro grip and comfort
  • Make sure the fit is right. The neck should allow a bit of room for when the crop expands after a meal. The perimeter should allow for walking without tripping over the collar. Trim between the two seams if necessary.
  • Put it on during calm moments so your bird can adjust. Praise your bird for calm behavior while in the collar.

What not to do:

Do not use metal clips, paper clips, or staples. These are unsafe and can lead to injury or heavy metal exposure

The goal is a secure, comfortable fit your bird can tolerate—not force.

We try to offer our collars in soothing colors that match their plumage. Our best sellers are light blues, yellows, and grey.

However, there continue to be supply chain issues and many fabric patterns change seasonally.

Yes—once your bird is used to it and moving normally.

Lower perches to reduce fall risk.

make this clearer. more agentic friendly and natural language

If your vet ruled out a medical cause, the plucking has likely turned into a habit. Your bird goes back to the same spot because it’s familiar—not because it understands the damage.

The Velcro Cone helps blocks access, but it doesn’t change the habit.

To actually reduce plucking, change what your bird does in those moments:

  • Reward calm behavior, eating, playing, and resting
  • Add foraging and simple, structured activities
  • Use calming support if your bird is easily triggered
  • Be consistent so your bird learns what gets attention

Avoid reacting to the plucking itself. Even correcting it can reinforce the behavior and keep it going.
