Parrot foot / leg chewing, is alarming and can become progressive. First, consult an avian veterinarian as mutilation often has a medical cause. These birds are prone to infection and crippling effects. A traditional collar would need to be so long to protect the bird that the bird won't be able to walk. A thick tube collar or a stiff plastic collar is warranted. When first introducing your bird to foot / leg grade bird collar, please consider the following:
- ✔ Foot / leg chewing takes on a compulsive energy so restricting the behavior is imperative. Leave collar on until wounds are completely healed.
- ✔ Combine a restrictive tube collar with pain medications and infection control in cooperation with your avian vet. Inspect wounds daily.
- ✔ Consider a hospital cage for birds with deep, open wounds. Assist your parrot in eating and drinking, as needed. Monitor your birds weight. Lower perches and offer clean perches daily to prevent injury and infection. Keep bird warm and clean.
